In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
