As I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
