The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
