Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
