Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
