We are verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
